20 Days of WoW blogging #8

Check out Spellbound to learn more about the challenge!

Day 8 – 10 things we don’t know about you

1. My thumbs look completely different. They are different size and shape. The right one resembles my father's thumb, while the left one is more like my mother's.

2. One single hair grows in the middle of my forehead.

3. I'm a supporter of the Green League of Finland.

4. The first game I really played was Loderunner: The Legend Returns, the Sierra re-release from 1994, I think. A Lion King one and Quake II followed shortly.

5. I cast my first ever official vote in favor of a homosexual person. I wanted him as my president.

6. I tend to find racial/national jokes funny. I am not a racist. Feel free to joke about my skin colour or mock my country of origin!

7. I spend a ton of time watching people play games. My personal favorite YouTube video makers/streamers include Lucikka, AdrineX, RandomDR and MrJallu101. I follow a bunch of others, too.

8. I work as a freelance writer. In the future I wish to work around music, games or writing - preferably all three.

9. As a kid I loved dinosaurs. I was crazy about them. I could have sworn to become an archaeologist.

10. I once asked a psychic person about reincarnation. He said he could see two previous lives: one as a pioneer in North-America, eventually violently killed by native Americans, and another as a soldier in a submarine during the second world war.

20 Days of WoW blogging #7

I am skipping day six until I have cleaned up my desk. It looks utterly horrible as it is.

Check out Spellbound to learn more about the challenge!

Day 7 – The reason behind your blog’s name

Adventures of the Hex Machine is what I've began to call my shenanigans on WoW. Hex Machine was initially (and still is) my guild master title in Menagerie, along with Lanfranco's Lightswinger and Kinsey's Shapeshifter - while I think Doomkin would be more appropriate. When we formed the guild, I ended up as the official guild master with all the rights, but I wanted to make sure that my partners in crime felt they were just as much guild masters as I was, so I suggested unique ranks for all three of us.

Hexxing is serious business. Once upon a time, when the first heroics of Cataclysm weren't yet tuned for incompetent gamers, we were in Throne of the Tides to complete Old Faithful for Glory of the Cataclysm Hero. We didn't realise the add wouldn't go from full health to zero upon getting hit by the geyser, so we had to do it on the second round with a new add. Our healer was already out of mana and struggling to keep us alive, so our tank (welcome back to WoW! \o/) ended up dying just before the naga was to be shot up in the air with the power of pure (?) water. With the tank dead, the minion would attack other group members, so without really thinking even for a second, I hexxed the add in the geyser. And we got our achievement. That is just one example why I justly claim the title of the Hex Machine!

As for the Adventures, well, 'adventures' is a nice word that fits the fantasy theme of WoW and my way of experiencing the game. I end up in strange and unexpected situations without planning them. I try to keep my mind open for everything and everyone, and find that tactic rewarding. Obviously Adventures of the Hex Machine is a self-ironic blog name, and when it comes to the Hex Machine herself, she is definitely an anti-heroine.

20 Days of WoW blogging #5

Check out Spellbound to learn more about the challenge!

Day 5 – Favourite item(s) in game

Although right now I'm really liking the feel of that Blood-Soaked Invitation in my pocket - despite the fact that it's, well... soaked in blood - I'm pretty nostalgic and sentimental when it comes to favorite items. A certain Crystalline Tear of Loyalty and a Gold Eternium Band hold their places in my bank. Four letters from a couple of years ago travel everywhere with me in my backpack.

I really enjoyed the pre-Cataclysm elemental unrest event, which is why I've kept Sul'lithuz Scale Bracers, Amulet of Evil Winds and Ring of the Three-Headed Beast, but my all-time favorite piece of equipment is the Tabard of the Scarlet Crusade.

20 Days of WoW blogging #4

No no, I haven't abandoned this challenge. I started it in November, but a ton of other stuff happened and I ended up posting over 20 times over the passed month, so I placed this one aside temporarily. But now blog stuff has calmed down and I dive back into the depths of my hazy mind to ponder this WoW thing.

Check out Spellbound to learn more about the challenge!

Day 4 – Your best WoW memory

After giving it a thorough thought I came to the conclusion that it's not a concrete event or anything like that that I want to talk about here. It's an emotional experience that occurred over time. It's the feeling of having experienced something, conquered something, learnt something. For example, we lacked maps to most instances until Cataclysm. Back when we didn't have the maps, I had to learn to navigate through those places with my visual memory. It was a challenge, being quite new to the game otherwise, too, but once I finally figured out the places and found something - or someone -, it was a very rewarding experience.

I'm not saying that I miss the time before instance maps, or that they should be removed from the game. No. They make a very good addition and should have existed longer than they have. It's very similar to people who claim that vanilla was the best era of WoW. They don't really think so, but mix up game features with their own feelings. They don't miss the server crashes, class imbalance or incompetent specs. They just really liked the feeling they had when they finished that grind that once seemed endless, or finally found an instance group after requesting one for three hours.

So, the World of Warcraft without instance maps was more annoying for a newbie than the World of Warcraft with instance maps, but looking back at the learning experience, I realise that the endurance it requires to crawl through phases like that is an important part of "bonding" with the game. I'm not happy that WoW has been tuned for people that prefer to have things handed over to them, but instead of complaining about them having it easier than I had, I rather reflect on my own experiences in the past and rejoice that I had to learn things the hard way... for I am the lucky one there.

IntPiPoMo 2012: Operation: Shieldwall

The goal of IntPiPoMo is to post 50 screenshots in 30 days. Learn more about it as introduced on Revive & Rejuvenate, with a list of the participants.

It was time for patch 5.1 to hit, indeed, and I'm personally enjoying it a lot. The new series of quests, both daily and regular, reminded me a lot of Warcraft III. Establish a base, get mortar teams, visit the dwarven camp! Many of the quest names are references to Queen and Guns N' Roses songs - why this is, I have no idea!

IntPiPoMo 2012: The Shattering

The goal of IntPiPoMo is to post 50 screenshots in 30 days. Learn more about it as introduced on Revive & Rejuvenate, with a list of the participants.

I don't think I had taken a Cataclysm portal since the night Mists came out. Even though Cataclysm got really, really tacky towards the end; even though I experienced a rather severe Cataclysm burnout (which resulted in me leveling two characters from 1-85 within a few weeks - talk about hyper mode); even though Dragon Soul had some of the worst raid mechanics ever seen, the aftermath is no different. It's just as strange that what used to be the present, is now in the past, and there is certain positively melancholic nostalgia to that.

There was a time when it felt like Cataclysm would never end. Did I wish it had ended? Yes. Certainly. But I always think of the past more benevolently than I do of the present. Time gilds memories, or how do you say it. Every cloud has a silver lining. Eh, maybe that has nothing to do with anything here. Well, here are some of the wonders that the Shattering got us to explore.

Mount Hyjal would have to be one of my favorite zones ever. You get to see some significant progression there, and I find the storyline quite touching each time I play through it.

Hans Zimmer - This Land

I was in Deepholm in my dream last night. It was a safe place with positive energy and cool, humid air, like in a limestone cave.

I thought Twilight Highlands was a very majestic and appropriate ending to Cataclysm questing.

Tentacles - a major element of Cataclysm.

IntPiPoMo 2012: Mount Neverest

What makes Mount Neverest in Kun-Lai Summit special to me is that it doesn't snow like that anywhere else in Azeroth. I also love the sound of wind there.

Feeling musical: Lament of the Nerfed Shadow Priest

'Feeling musical' - to rewrite gaming lyrics to a song - is the monthly challenge for November featured on Tastes Like Battle Chicken. Be sure to check it out!

For this I borrowed the melody of Killing Me Softly. My intention was to rewrite lyrics to the whole song, but as it's November, IntPiPoMo and Thanksgiving happened. Something called studies are happening as well, and with a lot of logic required, I need to put some extra focus in, as logic isn't one of my strongest qualities. In addition to this, I'm raiding at least three nights a week with Menagerie. We're all still in need of upgrades for certain equipment slots, so running raid finder weekly is necessary. All this takes a ton of time, which is why my contribution to this lovely challenge is mournfully tiny. But here it is, as follows, Lament of the Nerfed Shadow Priest.

Shadow Word: Pain now meets your skin
Ticking away wasted years
Killing you slowly with this dot
Killing you slowly with this dot
Spending my whole life
In this world
Killing you slowly with this dot

For Pasoyo with love.

IntPiPoMo 2012: Northern lights

In real life I live in Northrend. I love northern lights, and because I live in southern Northrend, I don't get to see them that often, which is why I like to watch them a lot in the interactive Northrend. In Azeroth I'm a shaman. Up north (a norther north than this north) there is a small native people, who have (had, at least) strong shamanistic influences in their culture, which is why, to me, northern lights and shamanism go hand in hand.

IntPiPoMo 2012: Vrykul

I update the blog pretty often, but I have to say that this month it'll get more than enough updates! I've decided to take part in the IntPiPoMo 2012 screenshot "challenge". The idea is to complete it during November, but as we're already over halfway through the month, I'll have about two weeks to post 50 screenshots of various subjects. My goal is to post 5-10 of those at a time.

In addition to that, I'd love to complete the November challenge on Tastes Like Battle Chicken. It's called 'Feeling musical' and you can read more about it here. I'll be quite short of time this month, but I'll try my best to find time and inspiration for that one, too. Now, however, I'll get started with the IntPiPoMo with some vrykul shots. And yes, I know prince Keleseth isn't a vrykul!

Nice tattoos!

For me personally, this view is legendary.
